Miraco Nutripharm is glad to be a supporting partner of the National University Hospital (NUH) Department of Orthopaedic Surgery public health forum in conjunction with the department’s 70th year anniversary. The public forum titled “Orthopaedic Problems in an Ageing Population” discussed a topic relevant to many of us - common Orthopaedic problems amongst silver citizens in Singapore’s aging population. It was a full house event with over 200 attendees strong.
NUH department of Orthopaedic Surgery has its roots in the University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery set up in 1952 at Singapore General Hospital (SGH). The department of Orthopaedic Surgery is a tertiary level referral centre which takes care of disorders of the bones, joints & the musculoskeletal system in both children & adults. NUH department of Orthopaedic surgery combines specialised care in Orthopaedics with a well-designed teaching programme for undergraduates & post graduates.
During the public health forum by NUH, there were engaging talks conducted by Dr Chua Wei Liang (Division Head & Consultant, NUH Department of Adult Reconstruction & Joint Replacement Surgery), Dr Dennis Hey (Senior Consultant, NUH University Spine Centre) & Dr Wang Ming (Associate Consultant, NUH Division of Sports, Shoulder & Elbow Surgery). The topics were Knee Pain in the Elderly, Problems of the Ageing Spine & Sports Injuries in Seniors.
During the presentation by Dr Chua Wei Liang (Division Head & Consultant, NUH Department of Adult Reconstruction & Joint Replacement Surgery), he mentioned that Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of knee pain amongst the elderly. Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage covering the bone ends deteriorate due to wear & tear, causing pain when bones rub against each other. Dr Chua also presented several treatment options that elderly patients can consider such as pain relievers, activity modification & physiotherapy.
Dr Dennis Hey (Senior Consultant, NUH University Spine Centre) presented about the spine, a linked column of bones running from the head down to the lower back. The spine encloses the spinal cord & the fluid surrounding the spinal cord. He spoke about a comparison between an ageing spine & a degenerating spine. While degeneration can be slowed down, ageing cannot. Dr Hey also shared about the different methods of treatment as well as useful tips on how to prevent injuries to your spine.
Lastly, Dr Wang Ming (Associate Consultant, NUH Division of Sports, Shoulder & Elbow Surgery) presented about shoulder pains. He spoke about frozen shoulder, a common joint disorder where there is a loss of normal range of motion in the shoulder. Dr Wang also presented some simple exercises for the attendees to follow to help improve their range of motion, as well as insightful tips on how to reduce the risk of shoulder pains & rotator cuff injuries.
There were also free educational booths outside the auditorium for attendees to learn more about various Orthopaedic implants, medical devices & health supplements. Miraco Nutripharm was also given a booth & presented 3 of our reputable bone & joint health products which are also available at NUH pharmacy & used by Orthopaedic doctors. These products are:

Our team took the opportunity to educate & answer the attendees’ questions about our health products using brochures & visual aids displayed at our booth. There were interesting conversations exchanged with the seniors. Some were looking for an alternative to their current treatment plans & others were interested to know more about the health supplements that were displayed at the booth. The attendees also walked away from our booth with some freebies like pens & notepads as a small token of appreciation of their time.
There was a great turnout at our booth & we were able to engage with most of the attendees showing interest in the health supplements & information we have to offer. It was a great opportunity for us to interact with the attendees, share information with them & hear first-hand about their bone & joint health concerns. Many of the attendees left the booth happy & armed with new information regarding the health supplements on display & their bone & joint health.
